Survey Interpretation

Computer Lab Management (CLM) periodically surveys faculty who teach in our computer classrooms. CLM uses this information to improve the quality of service in the computer classrooms. The survey results (especially question #2) show that overall faculty are generally happy with the computer classrooms.

We have seen an increasing number of students using their personal devices instead of the CLM installed computers during classes. We suspect it varies from class to class depending on if students can install the software being used on their own laptops. By using their own laptops students can avoid having to copy files back and forth.
We plan to investigate if & how it would make sense to replace some of the computers in computer classroms with spots for students to use their own laptops. We are currently collecting data to see if it is feasible.

Question 2. Please rate the following aspects of our services:

Needs significant improvement Needs some improvement Needs little or no improvement No opinion
Classroom availability (able to reserve times needed) 0 2 8 2
Support from computer lab managers 0 1 8 3
Support from the Computer Room Consultant (CRC) 0 0 7 5
Preparedness of the classroom (room cleared out, whiteboard supplies, etc.) 0 1 11 0
Computer usability and reliability 0 1 11 0
Preventing classroom interruptions 0 1 9 2
Classroom size (too small or too large) 0 2 9 1
Temperature control (room was too hot or too cold) 0 1 11 0
Layout of the classroom 1 3 8 1
Classroom environment (cleanliness, sound, etc.) 0 1 10 0
Other - Please specify below 0 0 2 2

Reasons given:

  • TLC 2211 has no central projector but instead TVs near groups of desks. This makes it very different to present as students are sometimes looking away at the TV. I would recommend a central projector in the room next to the podium. There is currently just a blank wall where a projection screen would naturally be located.
  • Limited availability. It would be nice to have a separate computer lab space that can be reserved for specific use for courses that do not use the computer labs for every class. The teaching labs need computer labs for specific dates for data analysis but it's been difficult to find availability unless we reserve it for the whole quarter. It feels like it's a wasted resource for the times that it doesn't get used but we don't have an alternative option.
It would also be nice to have a computer lab with larger capacity. Our class size is 48 students and there is no lab space that has enough computers for the whole class.
  • More whiteboard markers, temp was a little warm. But not that bad.
  • For some reason, Olson 27 was locked a couple of times during the term. I had to get the consultant to come in and open it up and reboot everything. And we had more technical issues than usual (the projector stopped communicating with the desktop and various student computers had consistent issues). But nothing too bad.
  • The room needs a central screen behind the instructor's desk. When students give presentations, their classmates are looking at screens a their tables because there is no central screen. I have found it difficult to teach during the times I needed all the students to work with me on a central screen. I have made it work, but it is not a good setup for some of the activities we do. (2211 TLC)
  • 247 Olson would benefit from additional whiteboards on the adjacent walls (not the window wall); which could improve board use with the screen down…always a bit of a juggle to use the board with screen that takes up all of the space.
  • In general , computer classrooms are too small for large number of students
  • No improvements necessary!

Question 3. How would you rate your overall experience teaching in CLM Computer Classrooms this quarter compared with previous quarters?

Better 1
Same 10
Worse 1
N/A 1

"Better" Reasons given:

  • There were issues with the temperature in the past. This year, the temperature was fine.

"Same" Reasons given:

  • I rarely have issues with my computer classroom that hasn't been able to be address quickly by the consultant.
  • I find the computer classrooms to be well-equipped, well-staffed, and well-appreciated by myself and my students.
  • My experience in the CLM computer labs is excellent. Tim Leamy did an excellent job. The computer lab was fantastic. However, I cannot teach there courses with large number of students. In general , computer classrooms are too small for large number of students
  • It didn't really feel any different from previous years I've taught, which is in no ways a bad thing as my experience has always been great!
  • Rare glitches with monitor but

"Worse" Reasons given:

  • Again, just a few off things for some reason that haven't happened before.

"N/A" Reasons given:

  • None

Question 4. Do students often use their own personal laptops in your classes?

Yes 10
No 2

Question 4a. In which classes do you see this behavior?

  • I would not say "often," but I have usually 2-4 students a quarter who want to use their own.
  • GGG 201D
  • All of them.
  • All of the classes I teach. Students prefer their laptops or tablets.
  • UWP 101Y which makes sense, the hybrid courses require that they have more time online, so used to own devices/prefer to classroom computers
  • BIS20Q
  • All my composition courses
  • CHE130B
  • Both DES 016 classes I teach in this room

Question 4b. Roughly how many student per class?

  • 2-4
  • 15
  • Maybe about half
  • 25
  • 25
  • 15
  • About half maybe more than half
  • 6
  • 18-24

Question 4c. Do you know why they prefer to use their laptops? Please share anything you have heard from students.

  • keyboard, forced mac for olson computers
  • Most of the time it is because all of their stuff is on it, but as a teacher, I think it is a lot easier for them to be distracted when they are on their own computers.
  • Preference for Macs; just easier to continue on their own computers
  • Nothing
  • Duo is one issue. They can also save work straight on their laptops.
  • see above (UWP 101Y which makes sense, the hybrid courses require that they have more time online, so used to own devices/prefer to classroom computers)
  • They are comfortable using their own machine. They have installed Matlab on their own laptop, and they like having files in the same place for homework and in-class labs. They do this even though the larger monitors for the computer lab computers would be helpful.
  • They can access their OneDrive on their laptop with the work offline option. They also conduct online research, so they get more easily bookmark what they find on their laptops.
  • Sometimes the students will use their laptop as an additional monitor while they are completing assignments. I had no issue with it.
  • Ease of working on files at home and class.

Question 5. Do you have any other comments or suggestions regarding the computer classrooms.

  • Nope - you are all doing a great job.
  • Been working well
  • Thanks for all your efforts!
  • Your support is AWESOME! Thank you
  • No additional comments. I love the computers rooms I've been using in the TLC over the last years
