Lab Management would like to know how we can improve the quality of service in the computer classrooms. We have used feedback in the past to improve our services and facilities, and hope to use your feedback to improve further. Our records show that you taught a class in one of our computer classrooms during the last quarter. If you were not the person actually teaching in the room, please forward this message to that person (such as a TA). Please take a moment to fill out the survey and try to be as specific as possible. The survey contains eleven sections which are listed below. To answer the survey, reply to this message and mark your answers to the questions below by putting an "x" or text, as appropriate, between the square brackets provided (eg. [x]). Since a program will automatically tally your responses for later analysis, please keep your responses between the square brackets provided. There is space for comments at the end of the survey. If you have taught in multiple classrooms, please respond for each classroom separately. For example, if you taught in both 21 Olson and 241 Olson please reply to this email twice, once for each room. This will allow us to match your comments with the specific computer classroom. Thank you for your time and input. Tim Leamy Information Resources ***** Computer Classroom Survey ***** 1. Which computer classroom did you teach in during the this quarter? (Please check only one. - very easy and helpful
- the schedule on the web was helpful in understnding what you all go through to assign a class and time
- reservation process went well although I was not informed that I would be charged for use of lab until after lab sessions
- simple and effective - what a great combination!
- Among my professional associations at UC Davis none as been more effective and efficient than my work with Peter Blando. He has been and outstanding asset to my teaching efforts. I would also like to thank Kay Macfarland and all the folks in AV for their help.
- Tim Leamy is a great consultant and works well with faculty to install and maintain software for student use.

Num Percentage Yes 15 75.0% No 5 25.0% Did the CRC explain the class in session sign.
Num Percentage Yes 6 30.0% No 14 70.0% Additional Comments
- Out of twenty class meetings twice the sign was not adjusted and the class times were not posted on the board
- at least half the time the lab was not cleared of students before I arrived and I requested current users to leave if not associated with class
- The reason that I checked both Yes and No. At Olson everything was ready to go. At Shields the room was not ready and students had to be asked to leave. This was not the fault of the attendant. He found that the room reservation was in the computer but had not been entered on the "daily use sheet." However he handled the situation very well.

- I realize 1154 Meyer is rarely used as a classroom so the absence of a projector is understandable. However it would have been helpful for demo purposes. Again I realize 1154 Meyer is rarely used as a classroom so the layout required some cramped quarters for the lecture/demonstration. I do like the 'bays' disposition of the computers and find it generally more conducive to research interaction and production than the more traditional set-up where all computers are in rows...
- I ended up bringing my own projector which is brighter and has sharper resolution (27 Olson)
- Since there were only 12 in my class I allowed other students to use the left (door) side of the room: I put out a note to that effect and told them I would turn off the printer. Even so the clicking keyboards were mildly distracting. In terms of the layout I was not able to catch students doing email while I was lecturing (27 Olson)
- The mechanism operating the roll down screen needs to be lubricated. It squeaks. (27 Olson)
- I really enjoyed the room. need more board space visible when the screen is down. (1102 Hart)
- the student computer to projector layout took some getting used to and I suspect made it harder for some of my students to focus-literally and figureatively on the lecture/demonstration. (1131 Meyer)

- Through my fault I did not inform lab management of the version of the software I was using because of the book I had ordered. So there was a slight problem: the CD included in the book couldn't be used and the students were on accasion confused (27 Olson)
- It would really be an enormous help to me if (a) we could get Microsoft Internet Explorer as well as Netscape installed on the 27 Olson machines (b) you could increase the number of machines in open (non-classroom) labs that have MS Front Page 2000 installed and (c) install Adobe Photoshop at least in 27 Olson. I CAN GET AS A GIFT FROM MICROSOFT AS MANY LICENSES AS YOU NEED TO COVER THE ADDITIONAL FRONT PAGE INSTALLATIONS. (27 Olson)
- a couple of them crashed -- we were only using power point. They were seeming a little sluggish I am too spoilt with G3s (241 Olson)
- need more storage space for multi-media projects. Would have liked to do a Premiere exercise but was concerned about storage requirements. (1102 Hart)
- The computers were slow and the 3.5 drives unreliable (1131 Meyer)
- The A drives NEED to be replaced (1131 Meyer)
- the absence of zip drives proved a challenge to the instructional module (Image Processing and an introduction to Photoshop. Also on a related note the network seemed unable to accommodate easily our moving files from 1154 (where images had been scanned onto the local machines... (1131 Meyer)
- Macs continue to crash with amazing frequency when taxed by a less than fully adept user or when doing multi-media. Sigh. On a related note the network seemed unable to accommodate easily our moving files from the machines hooked up to scanners to other machines using the transfer folder (1154 Meyer)

Overall the survey results seem very positive. Every ranking was
between 1.5 and 2.0, so in general most clients are quite satisfied with
the service they received. There are a few subjects which require more
explanation.
Question #7 was intended to show how flexible faculty are in regards to platform. The results show that roughly half of the instructors would be willing to use the other platform. Those who would not most likely have software that only runs on one platform.
Question #9 shows the type of problems that instructor face. It clearly shows that we need to improve the reliabilty of the hardware and software and do a better job of clearing out the rooms prior to classes. The issue of students entering during a class is more difficult. The CRCs do not know who is in a class, so it would be impossible to prevent them from entering. The Enter/Stop/Yield signs by the doors should make it clear to students that they should not enter if they are not in the class, but obviously some students ignore the sign. We will need to investigate other methods to address this problem.
Lab Management Response
Lab Management identified several issues in this survey which we plan
to address during the next year.
