Survey Interpretation
Computer Lab Management (CLM) periodically surveys faculty who teach in our computer classrooms. CLM uses this information to improve the quality of service in the computer classrooms. The survey results (especially question #2) show that overall faculty are generally happy with the computer classrooms.
However, there were some concerns raised in the comments:
- We had an ongoing issue with macOS systems not clearing out previous users. This causes slow logins and general slowness. We wiped and rebuilt all the Macs over Winter break which should resolve the issue.
- There were comments about the layout in different classrooms. Currently we have several layouts and each has trade-offs which favor some pedagogical methods but make other methods less effective. CLM needs to figure out how to better match faculty with their preferred classrooms. Unfortunately, in most cases course reservations are made so far in advance the faculty are not assigned until much later. We need work with the departmental schedulers to investigate processes to better place faculty.
Due to budget concerns we need to change how we support computer classrooms. The data from questions 4a & 4b are designed to help us develop new support models.

Question 2. Please rate the following aspects of our services:
| Needs significant improvement | Needs some improvement | Needs little or no improvement | No opinion | |
| Classroom availability (able to reserve times needed) | 0 | 0 | 3 | 5 |
| Support from computer lab managers | 0 | 0 | 7 | 1 |
| Support from the Computer Room Consultant (CRC) | 0 | 0 | 8 | 0 |
| Preparedness of the classroom (room cleared out, whiteboard supplies, etc.) | 0 | 2 | 6 | 0 |
| Computer usability and reliability | 1 | 4 | 3 | 0 |
| Preventing classroom interruptions | 0 | 0 | 7 | 1 |
| Classroom size (too small or too large) | 1 | 0 | 7 | 0 |
| Temperature control (room was too hot or too cold) | 0 | 0 | 8 | 0 |
| Layout of the classroom | 1 | 1 | 6 | 0 |
| Classroom environment (cleanliness, sound, etc.) | 0 | 0 | 8 | 0 |
| Other - Please specify below | 0 | 0 | 2 | 4 |
Classroom environment and Other reasons:
- Perhaps you can add built-in microphone system for instruction... (90B Shields)
- 2060 Esau instructor machine is slow and draggy, displays are small; 1 Olson layout is awkward with some machines facing a wall and none facing the instructor/display
- The markers on the whiteboard are often a bit "tired." If the consultants could check and replace more often, it would be great.
- We had several computers not work on several occasions this quarter. It was like they froze and wouldn't continue signing in.
- I wish the computer lab would be open 1 hour before class. Or even 30 minutes before class more consistently.
- It would be helpful to be able to directly access box and/or onedrive folders in the user's folder. Also, it seems to take a bit longer to boot windows up, which can be an issue when another teacher runs over a bit from the previous class.
Question 3. How would you rate your overall experience teaching in CLM Computer Classrooms this quarter compared with previous quarters?
| Better | 0 |
| Same | 6 |
| Worse | 2 |
| N/A | 0 |
"Better" Reasons given:
- None
"Same" Reasons given:
- There needs to be a screen in the front of TLC 2213. It's terrible to have to teach to the back of students' heads. I need to be able to make eye contact with students while I'm showing them something on the screen to see if they are paying attention and understand, and it's impossible to do. Also, it's really difficult for students to do presentations when they can't easily see or gesture at the screen while presenting. One of my students even wrote about that in a reflection last quarter. The desks are also too large and too far apart, so students in a group might still be 6-7 feet from each other; the distance does not foster discussion in large or small groups. I don't ever have groups of five, so it also always ends up being a weird use of space with six people awkwardly at one table because the groups are of three. And the layout in Shields 90A also always encourages students to be off task because I can't see what they're doing on their laptops. It's also hard to move around. The configuration in 90B and most of Olson is the easiest for moving around. It's also easy to work with people on either side or across from one without moving. And there are significantly fewer off task students in those configurations. When students are really far back in a large room, they are always off task.
- Everything is fine, small improvements as I mentioned above.
- Same excellent experience!
"Worse" Reasons given:
- As explained above. (We had several computers not work on several occasions this quarter. It was like they froze and wouldn't continue signing in.)
- It seems to take a bit longer to boot Windows up, which can be an issue when another teacher runs over a bit from the previous class.
"N/A" Reasons given:
- None
Question 4a. How often did you encounter these problems?
| Multiple times per class | Every class session | Every few class sessions | A few times per quarter | Never | |
| Projector / projection system | 0 | 0 | 1 | 2 | 5 |
| Connecting my personal laptop to the projector | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 7 |
| I or students can't log in | 0 | 0 | 1 | 5 | 2 |
| Computers locked by previous users | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 6 |
| Software crashes | 0 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 5 |
| Other (please describe below) | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 4 |
Other reasons:
- The projector in TLC 2213 for screen 2 frequently doesn't work, but now it works and number 4 doesn't work.
- I had issues on and off opening PowerPoint. One of the consultants told me to try "quitting" or maybe force quitting, and then PPT would work.
- described above (We had several computers not work on several occasions this quarter. It was like they froze and wouldn't continue signing in.)
Question 4b. When I have a problem during class, I prefer to receive support through:
| 1- Most preferred | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 - Least preferred | |
| In-person help | 7 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Online chat | 2 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 5 |
| Telephone/voice call | 0 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 3 |
| Online, self-help resources (Knowledge Base articles and/or AI assistants) | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 7 |
| Printed self-help resources (guides or documents in the room) | 0 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 4 |
Question 5. Do you have any other comments or suggestions regarding the computer classrooms.
- If you start using AI assistants instead of actual support, I will be among the many loud complainers. No one wants that.
- I would love to see 90A turned to the side to have rows of desks perpendicular to the front of the room. It makes group work and paying attention much easier. I would also love a screen in the front of the room in TLC with the desks closer together to encourage more connection. Thank you!
- No, I appreciate all you do for us.
- Everything else was fine and the support staff is always as helpful and friendly as possible.
- Keep it up! They are so clean!
- I really like teaching in this space. Adding a second whiteboard eraser would be helpful. Thanks.
