Survey Interpretation

Computer Lab Management (CLM) periodically surveys faculty who teach in our computer classrooms. CLM uses this information to improve the quality of service in the computer classrooms.

The survey results, especially question #6, show that overall faculty are very happy with the computer classrooms. The top areas identified for improvement were "More classroom availability" and "Newer/Faster equipment". Therefore, CLM focus on finding more space for computer classrooms and ensure all computers are regularly replaced so they meet teaching needs.

However, there were a few comments that show areas where CLM can improve our services.

  • There were several comments about phones in the Basement of Olson. CLM is happy to report campus phones were installed in those computer classrooms over Winter Break.
  • Computer classroom temperatures can be problematic. We will continue to adjust the HVAC systems to try to achieve settings acceptable to all our clients.
  • There were some issues with room preparedness (non-enrolled students not cleared out, markers not working, etc.) CLM will try to improve our processes to ensure the computer classrooms are always prepared for the start of class.
  • Some of the other issues relate to the physical rooms and therefore are difficult to change. CLM will keep these comments and attempt to address those concerns the next time we upgrade those rooms.

Fall 2007 Computer Classroom Survey

Computer Lab Management would like to know how we can improve the quality of service in the computer classrooms. We have used feedback in the past to improve our services and facilities, and hope to use your feedback to improve further.

If you have taught in multiple classrooms, please respond for each classroom separately. For example, if you taught in both 21 Olson and 241 Olson please fill out this form twice, once for each room. This will allow us to match your comments with the specific computer classroom.

Name:
E-mail Address:

1. Which computer classroom did you teach in during the last quarter? (Please check only one. If you taught in multiple classroom, please reply separately for each classroom.)

2. Please identify the top three areas (number 1 to 3 in order of priority) where we can improve our services:
Better support from the Computer Room Consultant (CRC)
Better equipment reliability
More classroom availability
Larger classrooms (to accommodate more students)
Larger classrooms (to allow more workspace at each station)
Better support from computer lab managers
Better preparedness of the classroom
Newer/Faster equipment
Reduced classroom interruption
Better temperature control (room was too hot or too cold)
Improved classroom environment (for example: quieter, better layout) - Please specify
Other - Please specify

3. How would you rate your overall experience teaching in CLM computer classrooms this quarter compared with previous quarters?
Better
Same
Worse
N/A (This is my first quarter teaching in computer classrooms)
Please explain your reasons:

4. What pedagogical issues, if any, have you faced while teaching in a computer classroom?

5. What technological issues, if any, have you faced while teaching in a computer classroom?

6. What is your overall teaching experience in the computer classroom?

7. Do you have any other comments or suggestions regarding the computer classrooms.

Question 2. Please identify the top three areas (number 1 to 3 in order of priority) where we can improve our services:

Number of 1's Number of 2's Number of 3's
Better support from the Computer Room Consultant (CRC) 1 2 0
Better equipment reliability 0 2 0
More classroom availability 3 1 3
Larger classrooms (to accommodate more students) 1 2 1
Larger classrooms (to allow more workspace at each station) 1 0 0
Better support from computer lab managers 0 0 0
Better preparedness of the classroom 2 0 0
Newer/Faster equipment 3 1 1
Reduced classroom interruption 2 1 0
Better temperature control (room was too hot or too cold) 1 2 1
Improved classroom environment 2 1 0
Other 2 1 2

Improved classroom environment reasons:

  • The room was usually too hot. (247 Olson)
  • Phone and phone line to call out in case of emergency (27 Olson)
  • Sometimes the projector flicker during the presentation (21 Olson)

Other reasons:

  • In the upstairs computer room at the end of the hall, it's a bid odd to have a CRC hang out there for most of the class. He certainly didn't do anything wrong /disruptive, but some class discussions might have been less self-conscious (particularly from students sitting right near him) than is ideal. (241 Olson)
  • Easier remote access to Class folder for instructor
  • Keep printer filled with paper (1131 Meyer)
  • Broader availability of Stata stat software
  • include a podcast recorder and microphone for breeze (2020 SLB)

Question 3. How would you rate your overall experience teaching in CLM Computer Classrooms this quarter compared with previous quarters?

Better 5
Same 12
Worse 1
N/A 10

"Better" Reasons given:

  • First time; I used the SS data lab previously and my experience with the CLM facility was better
  • I had no problems signing in!
  • Everything worked quite well. The projector was better than last quarter and the ability to monitor students from the computer was useful.

"Same" Reasons given:

  • Superb, as before.
  • I really like teaching in the classrooms, the student workers have been very helpful and courteous. But the person in charge of kicking other students out of the classroom, erasing the board, removing the extra equipment (this may be the fault of the previous teacher, I suppose)--this person was often off the job.
  • Tim Leamy has always provided excellent service and advice each time I have used the computer labs in SLB.

"Worse" Reasons given:

  • I general the class room was great and it is obvious you are trying very hard. Tim is extremely responsive. My reason for saying worse is that the quality of the white board markers was really bad all quarter. In past years, I have had to request new pens from the class room assistant. This year there were no replacement pens available and the ones eventually supplied did not produce thick enough writing that they could be seen beyond the middle of the class room. I finally ended up bringing my own pens. An assortment of colors, all of which work well, is a real benefit to my teaching effort.

Question 4. What pedagogical issues, if any, have you faced while teaching in a computer classroom?

  • None 5 responses
  • I am used to teaching in this environment. If I didn't have such great computer lab space on a daily basis, I'd have plenty of pedagogical issues that I don't have now. Internet access, the availability of library resources at a touch, these are things I rely on in my teaching, so it makes all the difference that we have networked computers to teach with.
  • I wish I could block specific websites without completely blocking web-usage. I want my students to be able to supplement my lectures with their own research, but I don't want them to chat, check email, IM people.
  • Students can't hear as well and often can't see each other during discussion. It's atrocious. (241 Olson)
  • I'm short, so talking over the monitors is an issue.
  • same as in 21 Olson--hard to see over monitors, even though they do flex downward, still, I'm too short when sitting down to clearly address everyone
  • The pens don't write very well on the pen board
  • 1131 Meyer has a really weird configuaration that difficults students sitting on the extreme side rows to see the white board and the screen. It would be desirable to have a narrower room with more depth. How can theis be done -is a good question (?)
  • I had a student helper from IT, or whatever computer support is, to try and help me with Smartsite, but Smartsite doesn't seem like a good venue for students to easily post their assignments and provide feeback - too many subsets, steps, folders, etc.
  • Interruptions by students who were not in the class walking into the lab or not leaving when lecture started. (2020 SLB)

Question 5. What technological issues, if any, have you faced while teaching in a computer classroom?

  • None 4 responses
  • occasional computer problem, but these are promptly taken care of by the tech people, and there are extra computers in the classroom for students to switch to.
  • I have not had any problems at all with Olson 21, except the lack of phone service there.
  • When I wanted to play a specific track on a CD, I had to forward through the entire CD. Neither the student worker nor I could figure out how to skip to the right track. This wasted a lot of my time.
  • A couple of times the overhead was not plugged into the computer, so had no hookup. Some students have tried to show movie clips, and we couldn't get the sound to work.
  • files being sent from the lab to my e-mail and arriving as dats.
  • The computer hardware, software and printer were excelent. The equipment was reliable, well maintained and the room was clean. Overall, in regards to technological issues, teaching in 1131 Meyer is excellent.
  • I noticed last week that the red spectrum is weak or nonexistent in the overhead projector for the classroom. (247 Olson)
  • None, even though we were continuously accessing hi-resolution images via Google Earth, the network performance was good.
  • Not this quarter, but in the past the printer often was out of paper
  • I had a student helper from IT, or whatever computer support is, to try and help me with Smartsite, but Smartsite doesn't seem like a good venue for students to easily post their assignments and provide feedback - too many subsets, steps, folders, etc.
  • I would like to be able to record podcasts and breeze sessions, for which I will need a microphone and a digital recorder.

Question 6. What is your overall teaching experience in the computer classroom?

  • Good 3 responses
  • Excellent. I love it.
  • Very Good 2 responses
  • I like teaching in these classrooms.
  • Fine, except for #4 That response was "Students can't hear as well and often can't see each other during discussion. It's atrocious"
  • I am very pleased.
  • Good. Can't complain.
  • Excellent 4 responses
  • Excellent. I really appreciate the helpfulness of the CRCs, and the good condition of the equipment.
  • Excellent. Great lab. Support from CRC students has been outstanding the two times when needed.
  • Good -- please see 3 above That response was "I general the class room was great and it is obvious you are trying very hard. Tim is extremely responsive. My reason for saying worse is that the quality of the white board markers was really bad all quarter. In past years, I have had to request new pens from the class room assistant. • Positive
  • I used the computer lab for timed writing exams and to show a film. I liked the computer lab much better than my regular classroom in Robbins hall. I would be intersted in having the entire quarter spend in the that computer lab room.
  • Very plesant!! CRC staff was wonderful and very concerned about me and my class.
  • excellent labs and excellent management/support

Question 7. Do you have any other comments or suggestions regarding the computer classrooms.

  • Temperature is sometimes to high. The lack of phone service is a security issue in the basement of Olson since we cannot get cell reception there.
  • No. Thanks for all the help.
  • The labs and staff are great.
  • Laptops that can be shut to facilitate discussion.
  • I commend Tim Leamy for providing such excellent working environment in the computer rooms.
  • keep up the good work. thanks!
  • It was fine, you all did a great job
  • Please see comments in question 3. That response was "I general the class room was great and it is obvious you are trying very hard. Tim is extremely responsive. My reason for saying worse is that the quality of the white board markers was really bad all quarter. In past years, I have had to request new pens from the class room assistant. • Service was helpful and quick. Thank you.
  • Make Smartsite much more user friendly for writing/workshop classes!
  • Tim Leamy was very proactive in contacting us a few weeks before we were going to use the computer lab. When we came in to do a pre-check, he was very knowledgeable, helpful, professional and personable. It made our experience a very positive one.
  • Keep up the excellent service.
  • Computer classrooms could be enchanced for everyday use if there were also tables without computers on them for group work.
