service in the computer classrooms.  We have used feedback in the past to
improve our services and facilities, and hope to use your feedback to
improve further.  You can find our past surveys and responses at

  Our records show that you taught a class in one of our computer
classrooms during Spring quarter. If you were not the person actually
teaching in the room, please forward this message to that person (such as
a TA).  Please take a moment to fill out the survey and try to be as
specific as possible.

• sometimes the students are a little hard to get rid of but they are generally good at respecting the sign. The signs are great.  
• once the printer wasn't ready to go--lacking toner I think? 
• markers often dry and faded
• any problems came from other instructor--a good friend--not being  finished on time
• t was fine. site attendants very good this quarter.
• Didn't know how to turn the projector on
• The room was clean and relatively quiet; I did let students use the other half (yellow sign) but had to take the printer offline. Instructions on printing to 15 Olson would have helped
• The screen in Olson 1 is more than a little weird--you turn it off on its way up
• THIS SPRING TERM, THE LAB ASSISTANTS WERE _MUCH_ BETTER THAN THEY HAVE BEEN IN THE PAST IN GETTING THE ROOM READY AND CLEARING OUT PREVIOUS USERS. I REALLY APPRECIATED THEIR DOING THAT.

Additional Comments

• Only one: it would be nice to have an option on ftp that states "new" to allow users in my database class to connect to the server they use in the course. we found an icon that didn't mean much which allows connection to a new server but it is not intuitive. (27 Olson)
• The machines were fine never freezing up; there was a file-sharing issue with the software but that was cleared up immediately (27 Olson)
• Only once did a machine freeze naturally during a final; the student was smart and did nothing and the lab manager was able to retrieve the file (21 Olson)
• A little slow. Some floppy drives don't work well (1131 Meyer)

Additional Comments

• Seemed to be some confusion over turning the printers off. Some CRCs liked to do it themselves others looked at me funny when I asked.
• I did not meet with them
• Sometimes seemed bothered by questions
• They were good--they did not know what to do about software (see below) that was unusual and they could do nothing about the projector when it went out of alignment but they were in all other circumstances helpful
• Twice the door was locked and late students couldn't get in but they solved a printer problem and recovered a lost file

Question 8. What can Lab Management do to make your teaching experience better?

• It is sometimes difficult for students to see the projection screen (from a line-of-sight perspective). The lights should be able to be dimmed--not just on and off. (163 Shields)
• YOU HAVE GOT TO FIND A BETTER WAY OF ENSURING THAT THE MOUSE THAT GOES WITH EACH MACHINE IS CLEAN AND USEFUL. I'VE COMMENTED ON THIS BEFORE. BUT THE MOUSE PADS USED IN 27 OLSON ARE POSITIVELY DYSFUNCTIONAL. USING THE MOUSE ACCRETES WITHIN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME A BLACK STICKY SUBSTANCE ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE MOUSE WHERE IT RUBS AGAINST THE MOUSEPAD AND ON THE INSIDE WHERE THE GUIDES WRAP AROUND THE MOUSE BALL. IT IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AND FRUSTRATING FOR STUDENTS DOING WORK THAT REQUIRES PRECISION USE OF THE MOUSE AND THE CURSOR TO PERFORM NECESSARY TASKS SUCH AS EDITING AN HTML DOCUMENT IN FRONT PAGE. (27 Olson)
• Keep doing what you're doing. thins working very well
• This campus just needs more labs especially around the MU area.
• The PC's need a centralized screen-control program like the Macs have: more than a few times the students were able to get away with email while I was lecturing and I couldn't get them to pay attention

Question 10. Do you have any other comments about the computer classrooms.

• On the days when 21 wasn't cleared I had people not registered for my class who would rrfuse to leave; Once I was unable to use Network Assistant as I had planned because an interloper refused to leave for the first twenty minutes of my class. The site attendant was helping the interloper to solve some problem and--because I had planned on being able to use Network Assistant with them--my students had to sit and twiddle their thumbs for 20 minutes. I was outraged (still am in fact) but didn't report it because it happened only once and the site attendant apologized profusely. All the same it's infuriating that a classroom of students who have paid to take this class should be forced to sit on their hands for 20 minutes because a student NOT registered for the class refuses to leave

• 1. EARLY IN THE SPRING TERM THE OVERHEAD PROJECTOR IN 27 OLSON WAS NOT PERFORMING WELL. THIS WAS VERY EFFECTIVELY FIXED AT MY REQUEST AND WHOMEVER DID THAT WORK DESERVES A COMMENDATION. 2. I WOULD LIKE YOU TO CONSIDER THE FUTURE OF THE WEB EDITING SOFTWARE INSTALLED ON THE MACHINES IN 27 OLSON. FRONT PAGE 2000 WILL SHORTLY BE SUPERCEDED BY FRONT PAGE 2002 AND WE SHOULD EITHER UPGRADE AS SOON AS WE CAN OR CONSIDER DROPPING THE MICROSOFT LICENSES IN FAVOR OF AN ALTERNATIVE PRODUCT. THE LEADING ALTERNATIVE WOULD PROBABLY BE DREAMWEAVER. IS THAT A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE FROM LM'S POINT OF VIEW? 
• More dry eraser markers are needed in the classrooms.
• I've been teaching exclusively in CAI classrooms since the fall of 1995 and I can say that despite occaisonal glitches (like Word 6.0 a few years back) I've noticed a trend of continuing improvement. I think you folks (Tim Peter Quico) are doing a great job and are very responsive to the needs of instructors and students
• The system worked extremely well; any problems were just the usual issues that come up
• The Macs were dependable for everything I needed
• Maybe limit the print queue. Some students had to wait for someone to finish printing 200+ pages to print their 1-2 pages. I let other students who are not in the class use the lab at the same time so maybe that's the problem.

Lab Management Responses
Lab Management identified several issues in this survey which we plan to address during the next year.

• The computer in 1131 Meyer were a little slow.  We are replacing those computers this Summer.
• We have been struggling to keep the mice and mousepads clean enough to prevent sticking.  Unfortunately, given the amount of use our computers receive it's very difficult.  Therefore, we will be purchasing optical mice with all new computers.  Optical mice will not be affected by the stickiness problems.
• We are upgrading the projection systems in 1, 21, 27, 241, and 247 Olson this Summer.  The new systems will consist of Sharp projectors and Smart Panels.  The projectors are much brighter than the old projectors, and should remain in focus without fine-tuning.  The Smart Panels should make operating the projection system easier and also allow faculty to hook up a laptop.
• We will investigate a PC screen sharing program.
