Student Survey #2 - Laptop Use - Winter 2005

As part of an ongoing effort to understand and meet the needs of our clients, Computer Lab Management (CLM) emailed a survey to a sample of our student clients on 2/11/2005. The survey was sent to 2000 students who used the computer classrooms during the Winter 2005 quarter. There were 178 respondents.

Survey Results and Interpretation

This survey focused on laptop use among clients.  Therefore, we only are interested in those students who own laptops.  Nearly three quarters of the respondents (123 or 69%) owned a laptop. The percentage of laptop ownership remained fairly constant around 20% through Winter 2003.  Since then the laptop ownership percentage has risen quickly.  (The data in the graph is from Student Survey #1 (Winter 2005). The percentage of laptop users in that survey was 57.5%.  So actual laptop ownership is most likely somewhere between 57% and 69%.)

More students are choosing laptop over desktops.  However, they generally don't bring their laptops to campus.  The Library was the only campus location which saw regular laptop use.  All other campus locations surveyed were infrequently used by laptop users. Students primarily used their laptops at home rather than on campus. Apartment and dorm lounges seemed to be the second most used location.

These results appear to indicate that most students do not actually bring their laptop to campus.  We attempt to determine the reasons in question #4.  There doesn't appear to be one overwhelming factor.  Physical infrastructure (power and small desks), security concerns, access to wireless networking, and printing access are the primary deterrents in bringing a laptop on campus.  The most common need identified in these surveys was increased wireless coverage and wireless printing.

Accordingly, CLM will investigate the possibility of providing wireless printing.  It may be a service we can provide in the existing campus computer rooms.

Survey Text

On 2/11/2005 the following survey was set to 2000 students who had used the computer classrooms since the start of the Winter quarter.
Computer Lab Management periodically surveys computer room users in
order to make adjustments and meet customer needs. This survey helps us
determine what changes and improvements are most appropriate. We would
like your input to determine what changes you feel would improve our
services. Please answer the following questions by putting an "x" or
text, as appropriate, between the square brackets provided (eg. [x]).
Since a program will automatically tally your responses for later
analysis, please keep your responses between the square brackets provided.

Thank you for your time and input.
