As part of an ongoing effort to understand and meet the needs of our clients, Computer Lab Management (CLM) conducted a student survey on April 6, 2003. The survey was sent to 1000 students who used the computer classrooms during the Winter 2003 quarter. There were 103 respondents. There were several items that were revealed in this survey. These include the following:

• Nearly all of the students primarily use CLM computer rooms during Monday thru Thursday (96.1%)
• Those surveyed tend to use the rooms between 10 AM and 5 PM (80%)
• A majority of these students were in their second through fifth year at UCD (71.6%)
• Students most often use our facilities for drop-in use (91.1%)
• Most of the students use the facility a few times a week or less frequently (82.0%)
• Close to half the resondents primarily use open access rooms (45.3%)
• Nearly one third of those surveyed primarily use the Hart Hall facility (31.0%)
• Students who use our lab tended to be enrolled in 3 to 5 courses (88.9%)
• Most of the students who took the survey said a minimum of 40 percent of their class materials are available via the web (66.3%)

The survey indicates that usage of the facilities is concentrated from Monday thru Thursday and between 10 AM and 5 PM. This is consistent with utilization figures. IET Computer Lab Management will need additional locations to meet demand rather on focusing on extending hours for existing facilities.

Few first year students and graduate/professional school students utilize our facilities. We suspect this is because of better alternatives for these students in the form of personal computers in dorm rooms in the case of first year students or restricted department computers. IET Computer Lab Management serves primarily clients who do not have easy access to on campus computing.

The survey indicates that students utilize our facilities most often for drop-in use and do so in either an unreserved computer classroom or open access labs which is not reservable for classes. Most of the drop-in use occurs during breaks in between classes, according to the respondents. IET Computer Lab Management will need to increase the number of open access facilities to meet student usage. Responses suggests that computer ownership does not reduce the demand for on campus computer access since students wish to utilize time between classes.
