Printing StatisticsGrowth of print demand increased during the winter quarter of operation. The total sheets used of over 1.6 million represented a six percent growth over the past quarter. The increase is in line with the projected 1.67 million pages for the quarter. The 16,485 users who printed, used an average of 99 sheets last quarter. The number also indicates an average of 5.5 pages printed for every login. The graph below shows the number of pages printed over time. The decline in Spring 2001 and Fall 2001 corresponds with the deployment of duplex printing (double-sided printing as a default) and the start of a policy to provide only 200 free sheets and charge five cents per sheet used after that amount on a quarterly basis. The continuing growth has shown that the sheets printed is rapidly increasing in pattern similar to quarters before duplex printing and excess printing charge were in effect.
GrowthThe graph below shows the change from quarter to quarter. The six percent increase in fall reflects the difference from the fall quarter. The increase is related to the increase in the average pages printed per person prints as the actual number of people printing dropped. The average jumped by six pages per person since last quarter. CLM expects a decline next quarter to correlate with a decline in unique users.
Printing Costs and IncomeComputer Lab Management charges students, staff, and faculty for printing in excess of 200 pages. We expect to charge 372 clients an average of $10.06 for excess printing. Together, these clients printed 74,869 sheets in excess of their quota. The expected $3,743 income will defray printing costs calculated at over $64,000 for the winter quarter operation. Below is a summary of print related costs and income. The total cost to support printing for the academic year to date totals over $150,000, more than 14 percent of CLM's total operational costs. Costs of printer supplies alone are predicted to reach in excess of $80,000 for the fiscal year.
