Printing Statistics
Number of sheets used increased during the winter quarter of operation. The total sheets used of over 1.47 million represented a significant growth over the fall quarter. The increase exceeded the page printed increase projected for the winter quarter. The 15,385 users who printed, used an average of 96 sheets last quarter. The number also indicates an average of 5 pages printed for every login. This was the fifth full academic quarter where clients could be charged for excessive printing, in excess of 200 sheets per quarter. The policy was highly publicized in Spring 2001 to prepare clients resulting in the first drop in demand. Other policies such as no duplicate printing was removed as a result of print charging. The charge is intended to contain cost and promote responsible printing. Double-sided printing was made as the default in all computer rooms beginning this past summer. Growth
The graph above shows the change from quarter to quarter. The 18 percent increase in winter reflects the difference from the fall quarter. The increase is related to the increase in the average number of sheets used per person to print as compared to last quarter. The average per person jumped by about 20 sheets. CLM expects moderate growth next quarter to correlate with a slight increase or decrease in unique users. Printing Costs and IncomeComputer Lab Management charges students, staff, and faculty for excessive printing. We expect to charge 205 clients an average of $17.61 for excess printing. Together, these clients printed 72,206 sheets in excess of their quota. The expected $3,610 income will defray printing costs calculated at over $55,000 for the third quarter of operation. Below is a summary of print related costs and income. The
total cost to support printing for the academic year to date totals
over $150,000, more than 14 percent of CLM funding. Costs of
printer
supplies
alone
are predicted to exceeded the predicted amount $54,000 for the fiscal
year.
